Good writing can be defined as having something to say and saying it well. [entries|friends|calendar]
for the literate half of livejournal

book club v. lj point oh.

Our mission is to bring intelligence back to the realms of the internet. Each month, a nonfiction and a fiction book will each be assigned to the community: during that month, members are encouraged to post questions (about any concepts you didn't quite grasp, anything you had trouble understanding, etc), discussion prompts, music or art that you feel represents or relates to the plot or characters, and general thoughts on the individual stories. Books for each month are chosen by community SUGGESTION. Most popular & compelling requests will be decided upon.

Feel free to introduce yourselves, prompt discussion, and engage in any sort of (relatively) on-topic public discussion. Our goal is to create a warm environment where people can share their ideas & opinions without worrying about being disrespected. Every voice counts.

Hobbies, interests. Along with the obvious reading, I also like to write my own short stories, I have the crazy dream of becoming a novelist some day. I would like to write, but I would also like to be a Child Psychologist.

Further suggestions, input, comments about/for eljaybookclub. I'm just glad their is a community like this. =)

Do you mind if people from this community add you? (Note: this is another great way for people to get to know each other & enhance their friends pages, but it is, again, entirely optional.) The more the merrier, I always love reading about people's lives (makes for great inspiration ^_^)

Hi, I'm new and this is my first post in any lj community (I hope I did it correctly).

First name: Rachel
Age: 20
City, State: Edwarsville, Illinois
Favorite book: The Color Purple is my favorite book that I've read recently. For all-time favorite, that might be The Jungle but it has a bunch of close runners-up. A more comprehensive list of favorite books can be found here.
Favorite author: Upton Sinclair, Chaim Potok, Roald Dahl
Did your high school have a required reading list? If so, what are some of the titles that were required? I always took honors or AP classes so we did have required reading. It would take forever for me to list it all here, but I got a pretty thorough English education in high school: short stories, fiction, poetry, drama (including Shakespeare), etc. Here's a sampling of some of the stuff we did: In Cold Blood, Beowulf, The Crucible, Light in August, The Canterbury Tales, Heart of Darkness... I took the AP English my last semester of high school.
Hobbies, interests: history, foreign languages, music (especially classical), books, etc. For non-book reading I'm partial to Vanity Fair and Foreign Affairs magazine.
If you are in college, what is your major? History and German (double major)
Further suggestions, imput, comments about/for eljaybookclub. nothing yet.
Do you mind if people from this community add you? (Note: this is another great way for people to get to know each other & enhance their friends pages, but it is entirely optional: Hmm, sure. As long as you introduce yourself and aren't a creepy stalker!

And so here we are, at the end of our first month. Commentary, anyone? Full reviews aren't necessary, but it would be nice to touch base & see how everyone liked their selections. Remember to keep suggestions coming for upcoming books.

I'm upset. I went to Barnes & Noble this evening to pick up the book More, Now, Again, but they didn't have it. I "ordered" it thinking it would be the price advertised in the community, but sadly It'll be $14.95
and the six nearest Barnes & Noble doesn't have it either. I have no money so I was relying on the $4.95 hard cover. I'm kind of a slow reader, so I was wondering if any other big book stores have it for cheap because I really want to start reading it now. Since its so late I was also wondering whether or not I should I just wait for the next book?

I presume this is all. Thanks in advance for anyone who maybe able to help

Barnes & Noble has the hardcover More, Now & Again in its bargain department for $4.95.
You can call then and double-check to make sure it's there/have them hold it for you.
I know this because I am awesome and work at Barnes & Noble.

In regards to April's Fiction/Nonfiction selections:
Given the fact that this community is still in developing stages, I am allowing YOU, the member, to decide what we will end up with for our reading selections in April. I went through the suggestions and came up with three fiction & three nonfiction possibilities that are available to be voted upon. For our first month I felt it was appropriate to stick with somewhat "new" literature. Keep in mind that it was very difficult to come up with six possible books for April, much less two- there was very little overlap in the suggestions. However, I arrived at the selections below by finding books that I thought would spark discussion and were similar to the books suggested.
Descriptions are beneath the cut tags.
Comments? Questions? Input? You have three days.

FICTION.
01. Louisa Luna - Brave New GirlCollapse )

02. Chuck Palahniuk - Invisible Monsters.Collapse )

03. Dave Eggers - You Shall Know Our Velocity!Collapse )

NONFICTION.
01. Stiff - The Curious Life of A Human Cadaver by Mary Roach.Collapse )

02. The World Is Flat - Thomas FriedmanCollapse )

03. More, Now, Again - Elizabeth WurtzelCollapse )

NOTE TO MEMBERS: Please choose one from each category & comment with your choice. All comments are screened. At midnight on April 1st, the results will be posted.

Favorite book: There are several and the list tends to change as I read more and more, but some that are always on the list are Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, Night by Elie Weisel and The Passion by Jeanette Winterson. I also really like Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx, but tha's technically a short story...
Favorite author: Again, I can't choose just one. Kelley Armstrong, C. S. Lewis, and Mercedes Lackey are a few though.
Did your high school have a required reading list? If so, what are some of the titles that were required? Not really. We just read whatever was assigned in whatever English class (or classes in my case) we were in during any given year/semester. I had to read the basics though, some Shakespeare, The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin, The Great Gasby, The Crucible, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.
Hobbies, interests: Reading, writing, roleplaying, cooking (when I'm not at school).
If you are in college, what is your major? Psychology
Further suggestions, imput, comments about/for eljaybookclub. None really. I'm just psyched to have found it. :)
Do you mind if people from this community add you? Feel free to! My journal is f-locked, but only because otherwise my roommate's parents would read my journal (because they're psycho). So if you comment, I'll add you.

Do you mind if people from this community add you? yeah, sure, as long as we do not become those types of lj friends who don't talk to each other & barely read posts, but are still on each others lists because we are both too polite to delete each other.

01. April is National Poetry Month. Since our opening is on the first day of April, how many of you would prefer to keep with the month's theme and choose a book of poetry as the fiction selection?

02. If anyone would be willing to fix up the community userinfo, please contact me (either through comment on this entry, my personal journal, or through email @ halfscripts at hotmail dot com.) I have a few ideas for general design, but ideas are more than welcome.

03. Remember to keep the suggestions coming! April 1st is fast approaching.
